Case Study
National Pharmaceutical Distribution Company
We were approached by a national pharmaceutical distribution company who needed to improve their returned goods processing system. They were looking to significantly improve the ‘returned goods’ process by getting products back onto the shelves in a more efficient manner. They also needed to speed up the confirmation and clearing of clients debit notes. In addition they needed to make cost savings wherever possible without reducing staffing levels.
We attended site and observed the function of the department and discussed with the management team the various practical problems they were encountering. The main problem appeared to be the time taken to identify a product manually from a printed document, then confirm it’s location to put away from another printed document. Inspecting the goods and finally confirming that they were as detailed on their clients documentation prior to crediting. The process was taking up to 3 minutes per item, which if you looked at the average return of 10 items per tote, could take 30 minutes to process. When you considered the number of totes the department handled per day the numbers were vast.
We looked at the various forms of data that our client used on a daily basis and found a number of threads that we could use to form a data table, which would enable us to write a software package using barcode scanning technology.
Now goods are scanned from the tote directly into a bin matrix to put away, they are visually inspected as they are scanned; the client’s documentation is confirmed and posted through to the credit dept for credit.
Our software program used with barcode scanning technology has speeded up the whole process by an amazing 70%. The client’s goals have been realised and whilst the number of staff required to scan the goods is fewer now the balance of staff within the department have been redeployed putting stock away in the warehouse. This process has been in place since 2005, over 12 sites and has generated substantial cost savings much to the delight of our client!
